Team of the Week – Round 5

Liz Ellis, most capped Australian international player and member of the Suncorp Super Netball Wide World of Sports commentary team, shares her selections for team of the week for Round 5.

GS – Caitlin Thwaites (Magpies Netball Club)
Did everything she could have to keep her team in the game against Sunshine Coast Lightning, despite the best efforts of superstar GK Geva Mentor. Scored 42 goals from 45 attempts.

GA – Tegan Philip (Melbourne Vixens)
Shot 25 goals in a flawless performance against the Queensland Firebirds, setting the Melbourne Vixens up for a significant away from home win.

WA – Erin Bell (Adelaide Thunderbirds)
Swung between the wing and the shooting circle, she fed beautifully and showed a great turn of speed playing slightly out of position.

C – Laura Scherian (Sunshine Coast Lightning)
An absolute dynamo in the middle for Lightning.  Was everywhere in attack and pulled off some remarkable defensive saves, including a match winning intercept in the dying moments that saw her team run down the Magpies.

WD – Gabi Simpson (Queensland Firebirds)
Tried her heart out and impressive stats, including two intercepts, despite the Firebirds being well beaten.

GD – Bec Bulley (GIANTS Netball)
It was her 200th game and she played it within a year of giving birth.  Jo Weston, Karla Mostert and Stacey Francis all had outstanding games at GD, but they are gonna have to take a backseat this week.  Send all complaints to Suncorp Super Netball management 😉

GK – Courtney Bruce (West Coast Fever)
A breakout game saw her finish with 5 intercepts, including 3 in the last quarter when the game was in the balance.  It was the performance we have been waiting for all season.
