Gabi Simpson has been named captain of the Lorna Jane Queensland Firebirds, ahead of the 2017 Suncorp Super Netball season.
The 24-year-old will be joined by Caitlyn Nevins who has been elected vice-captain, both selected by the playing group in a confidential team vote.
Simpson, a two-time Premiership player, said she was honoured to be selected as the captain of the Firebirds heading into a new era.
“I bring a lot of passion – passion for the game, passion for the girls and passion for the Firebirds. To have the opportunity to lead such a fantastic club is something I will treasure,” Simpson said.
“When I came to this club as a 20-year-old the culture was extremely nurturing and got the best out of me on and off the court. As the leader I can help drive the senior players to empower the next generation.”
Nevins’ election to the vice-captaincy marks a remarkable rise for the 28-year-old, who has flourished since moving to Queensland in 2015.
“I’m excited, humbled and really proud to lead this team with Gabi,” Nevins said.
“We’ve established a fantastic culture under Laura, Clare and Rose and now we’ll look to continue that with our own individual flair.”
Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke said the pair were perfect embodiments of the Firebirds culture.
“Gabi will bring her enthusiasm and passion for the Firebirds and maintain consistency with the high standards we require,” Jencke said.
“Caitlyn will bring her maturity, court smarts and experience. Both girls are passionate about the club and the commitment that comes with wearing the purple dress.”
