Watson named Suncorp Super Netball rebel Young Star
Melbourne Vixens midcourter Liz Watson has been named Suncorp Super Netball rebel Young Star in the inaugural season.
23-year-old Watson debuted for the Vixens in Round One, 2014, after earning a last-minute call-up on the eve of the 2014 Trans-Tasman Netball League season, featuring in the Vixens premiership win in her first year.
She has worked her way up within the Vixens and has taken on the responsibility of co-Vice Captain alongside Tegan Philip this year.
An anchor of the midcourt, Watson has played every quarter of every game for the Vixens in 2017, spending just two minutes on the bench in Round 14. She has 57 national league appearances since 2014.
The young star plays a critical role in feeding the Vixens shooters, topping the league during the home and away season for feeds into the circle, with 536 recorded, in addition to 288 goal assists. Watson also registered a respectable 30 pickups across the season, demonstrating a hunger for the ball.
The leader was an inspiration to her team in their Round 11 clash against the Queensland Firebirds, with a relentless performance and a season-high 51 individual feeds into the circle.
Watson started playing netball at the age of 12, at a Primary School sports competition. Her first junior club was Park Panthers Central Lynx Netball Club in Melbourne’s inner suburbs.
“We are delighted to offer the rebel Young Star award to an outstanding athlete from the 2017 season of Suncorp Super Netball,” said rebel’s Managing Director Sports Retail Erica Berchtold.
“For us, if just one more girl is inspired to pick up a ball, and many more follow, we are excited about that.
“It’s also about letting younger women know that sport, is a viable career path and businesses like ours will do whatever we can to support them.”
The rebel Young Star Award recognises the outstanding on-court achievements of a Suncorp Super Netball athlete, aged under 23 years at the beginning of the season.
The inaugural Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final will be contested at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Boondall on Saturday 17 June. General public tickets will be available via Ticketek from 1.00pm Tuesday 13 June, or watch live on Nine, 9Now or the Netball Live App.
