Magpies Netball will mark its return to Launceston in 2018, after moving its round six home match against the Queensland Firebirds to Tasmania.
Following the success of the 2017 encounter, the Magpies will meet the Firebirds in a rematch at the Silverdome.
Originally scheduled for Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne, the two sides will now face off on Sunday 3 June in Launceston.
As part of the club’s partnership with the Tasmanian Government and Netball Tasmania, the Magpies launched the ‘Festival of Netball’ in Launceston in 2017.
In a bid to grow and support grassroots netball in Tasmania, the Magpies hosted an array of events in the community during their four-day trip, before defeating the Firebirds by two goals in front of a passionate Tasmanian crowd.
Netball Tasmania chief executive Aaron Pidgeon said he was excited to welcome the Magpies back to Launceston.
“The Magpies have been a strong supporter of netball in Tasmania over the past 12 months, and we’re excited to have them back to Tasmania in 2018,” Pidgeon told Magpies Netball this week.
“The Silverdome has proven to be a great venue to view elite netball, and we’re hopeful of building on what was a strong crowd and a fascinating content in 2017.
“With the talent and athleticism on display between the two sides, we encourage the Tasmanian netball community to turn up and support the Magpies in Launceston.”
The round six clash against the Firebirds won’t be the only appearance the Magpies make in Tasmania in 2018.
Before the Suncorp Super Netball season commences, the Magpies will travel to Hobart to meet the Giants in a pre-season clash.
Furthermore, the Tasmanian Magpies will feature in the Australian Netball League (ANL), with the likes of Cody Lange and Sam Gooden lining up on court for the Pies.
General Manager of Magpies Netball Jennifer McIntyre said the club was looking forward to continuing its relationship with Tasmania in 2018.
“In conjunction with the Tasmanian Government and Netball Tasmania, we were able to establish a really strong foundation for Magpies Netball in Tasmania in 2017.”
“We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Launceston this year, and we can’t wait to get back and engage with the netball community in Tasmania next year.”
