Simpson and Nevins to lead Firebirds
Gabi Simpson and Caitlyn Nevins have been re-elected captain and vice-captain of the Queensland Firebirds for the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball season.
The pair were chosen by their teammates at a confidential team vote during December.
Simpson said she was delighted to be retained by her peers and was optimistic about the season to come.
“It’s very exciting to be captain again in 2018, especially given this club means so much to me,” Simpson said.
“I’ve built the most fantastic relationships and the club has given me a lot over my five years here. I learned a lot (in 2017). It’s about surrounding yourself with great people.
“I’m so excited to have Geitzy and Mahalia (Cassidy) back in 2018. Geitzy is all about action. To have her back in the mix is so important. The same goes with Mahalia. She’s our action figure and brings so much tenacious energy.
“We really need to build on what we created last year. At the end of the year we had three really strong games where everyone played their role. There was an air of confidence about us and that’s what we have to bring into 2018.”
Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke said she was delighted to see the duo returned to their positions and their leadership development would be benefited by the return of veteran Laura Geitz.
“It’s really exciting that Gabi and Caity have been selected for 2018,” Jencke said.
“It’s great to see Gabi had the backing and support of her peers and that she’s held in such high esteem.
She has great energy, she’s inspirational and she engages with absolutely everybody on and off the court.
“Laura is an inspirational leader and even though she doesn’t have the title, she’ll lead in her own way. In our club, anybody can be a leader at any time. Gabi and Caity will really benefit from that.”
