Green to lead Giants in 2018
Veteran midcourter Kim Green and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Jo Harten will lead GIANTS Netball in the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball season, with the club’s leadership group announced just days out from its season-opener.
Green, who captained the team last season but was sidelined for most of the year after rupturing her ACL in Round 5, will again be in the top job, with Harten her vice-captain.
Defender Sam Poolman rounds out the Giants’ three-player leadership group.
GIANTS Netball coach Julie Fitzgerald said the three players epitomised the culture that the club had created in its inaugural season.
“The three of them are the ultimate team players. They are three people who genuinely put the team ahead of themselves. They’ll keep us accountable so that we always stand for the values that we’ve established,” Fitzgerald said.
“I think they’re very proud of what GIANTS Netball has achieved and they want to leave a legacy for all the people who follow us.”
Green is set to make her return from injury in Round 1 in what will be her 184th national league game, to go with her 74 Test caps for the Diamonds.
Fitzgerald said she was the obvious choice to lead the team as it bids to go one better this season, after going down to Sunshine Coast Lightning in the 2017 grand final.
“Kim is a born leader. She obviously has great experience, which is invaluable in the role. It goes beyond just leading on the court though. She has a special connection with everyone, especially the younger players. She cares deeply about the team and works very hard to support them,” Fitzgerald said.
Harten was pivotal to the England Roses’ Commonwealth Games success, and is on track to play her 100th national league game later this season, while Poolman established herself as one of the league’s best young goal keepers last season.
“Both Jo and Sam are very hard workers. They know what is expected of them to be part of a team and how hard you have to work to maintain your own standards and the team standards. You can see their grit and determination on court and their desire to win and for us to play our best every week,” Fitzgerald said.
GIANTS Netball start their Suncorp Super Netball season with a grand final rematch against Sunshine Coast Lightning begins at 1pm (AEST) on Sunday 29 April, when they take on the Sunshine Coast Lightning at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. Tickets are available from Ticketek.
