The Queensland Firebirds took on the Collingwood Magpies in the Easter Clash, and despite the Magpies being favourites, the Firebirds held the lead for most of the game. This was however until a huge third quarter from the Magpies saw them regain the momentum and bring home the win.
Donnell Wallam had a dominant presence from the get-go, holding her position and demanding the ball. Wing Attack Lara Dunkley fed her the ball quickly rather than taking her time and this resulted in quick scores.
On the other end, Shimona Nelson proved difficult to stop, but the Firebirds were relentless in their defensive efforts. They showed their hands high around the circle and worked tirelessly to prevent the ball from getting to Nelson.
The Firebirds won the first quarter by five goals, but the second quarter was more even, both teams scoring 15 goals, the Magpies doing well considering Ash Brazill had to leave the court after a hard hit. Sophie Garbin had the chance to cut the deficit to three but missed the super shot on the buzzer, the Firebirds maintaining their five-goal lead.
The second half was a completely different story. The Magpies came out of the break with unmatched energy and were quick to swing the momentum back in their favour. Their intensity on defence allowed them to force numerous turnovers.
The Firebirds had already shown signs of hesitation earlier in the game, being called for a held ball on multiple occasions. But now, they lacked the confidence to move the ball up the court, forcing tough passes and losing their balance on their feet.
Their inability to score combined with the offensive run the Magpies found themselves on, meant that the score line was tied before the Magpies took the lead for the first time since the first quarter.
Despite the Firebirds winning the fourth quarter thanks to some sharp super shots from Wallam, the deficit was too difficult to cut back, considering Nelson went 18/18. In the end, it was the more experienced team that came out with the win.
Both teams had high-percentage goal shooters, but the Magpies' pressure in the midcourt meant that the Firebirds struggled to get the ball into their shooters.
