It’s been a hot start for Julie Fitzgerald and her GIANTS since their inception in 2017, but this is a squad determined to take the next step and win the club’s first premiership.
Australian Diamonds captain Caitlin Bassett joins the team, fresh from leading the Sunshine Coast Lightning to their second straight title.
Her ability to gel with both Jo Harten and Kiera Austin will be key to the GIANTS success going forward.
Serena Gutherie leaving the GIANTS could prove to be the biggest loss of the off-season.
She leaves a huge hole in the GIANTS midcourt for Kim Green and Jamie-Lee Price to fill, alongside former training partner Amy Parmenter.
It’s a talented but lean midcourt, with just those three players named as pure midcourt players, that will have to pull some large minutes throughout the season.
Sam Poolman and Kristiana Manu’a lead a solid yet inexperienced group of defenders.
Talented youngster Teigan O’Shannassy will start the season on the sidelines recovering from an Achilles injury so it will be up to 18-year old Matilda McDonell to pick up the slack.
It’s a squad brimming with talent all over the court. It’s hard to imagine any team stopping the attacking combination of Bassett, Harten and Austin but depth through the midcourt and defense could be an issue for the GIANTS throughout the season.
It’s a NSW derby to the start the season for the GIANTS, as they take on the cross-town rival Swifts on Sunday April 28 at 1.00PM.
