Earlier today, the GIANTS made a request to the League for this Sunday’s match to be rescheduled due to the growing COVID-19 impact within their playing group. When considering the request, the League has taken into account a number of factors, including the team’s 10 contracted athletes and their playing positions, in line with the COVID-19 Contingency Framework.
The League has been monitoring and consulting with the GIANTS regarding their circumstances as they have evolved throughout the week to support the club in securing replacement players.
The GIANTS reported one further case today, bringing the total number of impacted players in their contracted 10 athletes to:
- Three athletes isolating under government health and safety protocols
- Two athletes who have cleared isolation, yet to be cleared medically to return to play
The League has not approved the GIANTS application to reschedule the match, giving extensive consideration to all requirements and protocols outlined in the COVID-19 Contingency Framework, including the availability and depth of replacement players to supplement the GIANTS’ full playing list of 18 athletes.
“The COVID-19 Contingency Framework supports the League in working through the impacts of COVID-19,” said Netball Australia CEO Kelly Ryan.
“We know there will be challenges this year, but we are determined to return to a home-away season after two years of disruption from a global pandemic.
“The GIANTS have a list of 18 athletes, and we acknowledge and appreciate their work to secure replacement players to allow this match to proceed.
“The league will consider all requests to reschedule a match on a case-by-case basis and we will continue to monitor the GIANTS situation this week.”
