Sunshine Coast Lightning is committed to providing meaningful support to communities affected by the Australian bushfires, today announcing the first of many initiatives.
The Club will host a community BBQ fundraiser in February, alongside Lightning’s affiliated USC Thunder side and Melbourne Storm’s feeder rugby league team, Sunshine Coast Falcons.
Netball Australia, together with all Suncorp Super Netball clubs and member organisations are also working towards a league-wide collaborative response including netball-specific recovery initiatives, which Lightning will be a key part of.
“On behalf of Sunshine Coast Lightning, we send our sincere thoughts to all those affected by the Australian bushfires and the communities still fighting these devastating fires, and the recovery and rebuilding to come,” Lightning CEO Danielle Smith said.
“We are beyond grateful for the tireless and heroic efforts of the firefighters, emergency service personnel and countless volunteers who are endangering their own lives to save, protect and rebuild.
With Lightning’s strong ties with its majority owner, Melbourne Storm, both teams’ players, coaches and staff have today opened a Facebook appeal, with funds raised to be donated to the Victorian Bushfire Disaster Appeal.
The Storm family will kickstart the campaign with a $25,000 donation, with individual contributions from players, coaches and staff forthcoming.
The fundraiser aims to raise a total of $150,000 as part of these initiatives.
