The Collingwood Magpies today confirmed that Madi Browne and Geva Mentor will the team as co-captains for the upcoming 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season.
This will be Browne's fourth consecutive year as captain and second with the Mentor by her side as co-captain.
Across a 14-year career Browne has earned 61 test caps for the Australian Diamonds and is the only two-time winner of domestic netball’s highest individual honour, the Liz Ellis Diamond. She has played a total of 164 national league games.
2020 will see the pair take the court together for the first time in black and white after Browne was sidelined for the 2019 season due to a right knee injury.
Mentor, Collingwood’s 2019 best and fairest winner, played a complete 2019 season and tallied the second most deflections (86) and defensive rebounds (33) for goal defenders in the league.
In July last year Mentor earned her 146th test cap, after winning national selection to share in the English Roses World Cup campaign that finished with a bronze medal.
Completing the leadership team, Australian Diamond, Kelsey Browne, will support the pair as vice-captain.
Browne won national selection in 2019 to share in the Diamond’s World Cup campaign that brought home a silver medal from Liverpool.
2019 saw Browne play her 50th national league game before she injured her left knee in round 13 of the Super Netball competition. Browne will be sidelined for a portion of the 2020 season.
Collingwood’s selection panel decided re-appointment of the current leadership group would ensure stability within the squad give the current landscape.
“With the year that has been, re-appointing co-captains Madi, Geva and vice-captain Kelsey, we believe, is the best thing for the group during this unique situation,” Collingwood’s GM of Women’s Sport Jane Woodlands-Thompson said.
“It’s important to reward and recognise leaders who have continued to guide the group during this difficult time. We are delighted to have three strong-willed individuals take the reins for another year.
“The club has great confidence in Madi, Geva and Kelsey to place the Pies in a position of success for the 2020 season.”
