A concept that sparked a conversation with more than 14,000 fans and kicked off a healthy debate on the 2-point shot and whether it should be introduced in the Suncorp Super Netball league.
And boy did you make your feelings known. We now know exactly where you stand on the matter and it’s definitely not within the outer edges of the goal circle.
Sure, there were there a couple of you who could see the potential in the two-point shot, believing it could take the game to new heights, but these few were overwhelming outnumbered at the post. In most of your eyes, the 2-point shot, just isn’t an option.
Here is a selection of your responses.
Nope. Not here for it.
I’m a mid to long-range shooter myself, but the two-point shot takes away a lot of the skills required for circle movement and drives. As a few others have mentioned, it takes the eye away from say a shooter making a good drive to post, towards a GA at the top. The shooting circle, believe it or not, isn’t all about shooting… nor should it be – Rhiannon Smith
Scrappy and messy
Absolutely not! It made the game scrappy and messy with little structure inside the circle. So many missed goals, they looked like throw and hope shots. And worst of all, players in the league will then need to adapt back to the regular rules for the international games!! It’s ridiculous!! Netball doesn’t need new rules! – Amy Logg
Nothing beats the original
No, it’ll ruin the game. Netball is netball, like cricket is cricket and rugby is rugby. You can have your variety of the game in Fast5, the 20/20 or the 7’s, but nothing beats the original game – Jhon Swafford
More pow
For me I loved it. A goal shooter should be exactly that. Be able to shoot from wherever in the circle they choose and should be rewarded for shooting further out than the twin towers that now stand at either end of the court. These close-up shots do nothing for the spectators that don’t know our game. For netball to become a prime-time watched sport we need this. Sure, take the close shot to secure the points but if talent at shooting brings more pow to our game BRING IT. It will change our game there no doubt, but you will also see a whole new set of shooters, the one that thrive in the long bomb situation. It really needs to be all game so to bring an unexpected vibe to it, Sunday saw the defence change the minute it hit the 5 minutes to go. We can move forward and make our game better for all. Love my sport and can see it moving forward – Fiona Mott.
A brilliant game, played brilliantly
I don’t mind it as a novelty, but in the regular season I want to see these amazing athletes play by the same game we play at a grassroots level (and in international comps). It helps build an understanding of skill and strategy for junior/community players. Watching it played by the best grows our appreciation of the sport. We have Fast5 for novelty. Let us keep seeing our brilliant game played brilliantly – Jessica Kean
Doesn’t rely on towering shooters
I personally love it as it changes the game dynamic and doesn’t rely on towering shooters that just stand under the pole. More agile moving shooters they can bomb from long distance. Would love to see it introduced – Jo Thomas
The evolution
I liked it. Rewards a shooter for more skill rather than just dropping it in from under the net. It adds another dimension to the game, like the three points in basketball. Anyone can shoot if you are a tower, but not everyone has the eye for long range. That’s what we love to see in a game. It could be great for the evolution of netball – Janine Monneron
Suncorp Super Netball stars Geva Mentor, Helen Housby and Caitlin Bassett also took the opportunity to mix with the fans and have their say.
The usual rivals on court were together in thinking that the concept worked in the charity or exhibition style setting but felt that the 2-point shot had no place in the Suncorp Super Netball league.
The first brave backer of the controversial rule, Paddy Regester, is sticking to his guns, even if he doesn’t share the popular view.
“What an amazing response! After reading through the comments, it seems my opinion was not a popular one. And that’s totally fine!!! But I stand by my view for two reasons: I believe it’s the next logical step for the sport’s evolution and I can’t deny what I felt in stadium during the Bushfire Relief match. It was exciting and it changed the game, which I believe is a good thing.”
