After a heartbreaking 56 to 57 loss at the hands of the state rival Sunshine Coast Lightning ended their 2018 season, the Queensland Firebirds will be out to make amends in 2019.
Save for the retirement of club legend Laura Geitz, Queensland comes in to the season with a largely unchanged side.
Despite losing Geitz, the Firebirds look to have the players to fill that hole in Kim Jenner, Laura Clemesha and young star Tara Hinchliffe. Together they represent a defensive unit which will be a nightmare to score on.
The strength of the Firebirds is in attack, where Gretel Tippett and Romelda Aiken combine to create the most dynamic shooting duo in the league. Pencil them in 400+ goals each, all going well.
Captain Gabi Simpson leads a tough midcourt that may find itself stretched by the speedier teams in the league.
Jemma Mi Mi impressed in her debut season and should continue to develop in year two while Caitlyn Nevins and Mahalia Cassidy provide the experience alongside Simpson.
It’s an exciting time for the Firebirds, with a brand-new stadium and a team in transition.
How their young starters respond to the added pressure will determine just how far this team can go.
The Firebirds open the 2019 season on the road against the Melbourne Vixens on April 27 at 3PM.
