Giants, the only team keeping West Coast Fever honest
Is the minor premiership now just a two-horse race? The Giants duly dispatched the Thunderbirds on Sunday, even though they had their captain Kim Green out with an injury, to take them back to within four points of Fever.
Fever have dominated the top spot throughout the season, with their losses to the Firebirds and the Vixens not being enough to knock them off their pedestal.
But the Giants have never let go of their tails and have quietly gone about their business – week-in-week out – picking up points and playing consistent netball.
They now have four very tough away fixtures to play, but if they can get through and secure solid points – their last game of the season sees them take on Fever, on their own court, in front of what will most likely be a packed Sydney house. What a match that will be!
Do the Collingwood Magpies need to go back to basics?
The Collingwood Magpies season is on life support after a heavy loss to the West Coast Fever at the weekend.
There have been many questions asked about why this star-studded roster has failed to fire this year, but commentators noted that perhaps an over-complicated game plan has restricted their talent.
Against Fever, multiple changes were made throughout the game – while the big news being that defender Sharni Layton was not used at all.
Fever made zero changes to their line-up. Are the players getting too confused about their role in a squad that has experienced so many alterations during matches?
The Vixens mid-court are on fire, at the most important time of the season
The Vixens made it three-from-three after a polished performance against the NSW Swifts on the weekend, in a game that saw them present their full mid-court arsenal.
Led by Liz Watson in wing-attack, who was outstanding with 40 goal assists, the Swifts couldn’t get anywhere close to stopping them from dominating the ball and feeding their attacking circle with a barrage of goal-scoring opportunities.
Whether it’s the introduction of Renae Ingles, giving her the confidence to push forward and terrorise opponent defences, or just that she has found form in her own right – over the last few games she has been the driving force behind a Vixens run of good results. Can she take them all the way to the Grand Final?
Deakin University Australian Netball League champions
The Tasmanian Magpies captured their maiden Deakin University Australian Netball League title at the weekend with a nail-biting one-goal win against the Canberra GIANTS.
Tasmania had never even reached the finals before this season but held their nerve to claim an emotional title.
The ANL is the stepping stone league to the Suncorp Super Netball competition and there was plenty of talent on display this season that we might see running around for your club soon.
