Kate Shimmin has become the second player to re-sign with Sunshine Coast Lightning as the team begin to shore up their stocks in both attack and defence.
Shimmin possesses a real versatility, capable of playing across all three defence positions - providing a unique point of difference in each with her incredible reach and athleticism.
The 29-year-old seamlessly transitioned into the team in 2021, recognised with the Team Spirit Award at the annual gala event.
Head Coach Kylee Byrne said Shimmin’s impact both on court and through her persona has only benefited the Club.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with Kate this season, she is a real team player and her unique style of play is exciting as a coach, strategically,” Byrne said.
“Her enthusiasm is contagious and that has been a really valuable attribute during another season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Kate made some huge gains in pre-season last year and the aim is to continue that growth now to enable her to play the consistent 60 minute games for next season.
“We’re glad to have her back on board and I can’t wait to see what she produces in 2022.”
Shimmin said she had really settled at the Sunshine Coast this season and is eager to see what 2022 holds.
“Coming into Lightning with fresh eyes has been such a great learning experience for me and I really want to build on that next season,” Shimmin said.
“I feel fortunate to play alongside so many great women and I think that immediate belonging makes you want to really play your role for the team and do your best with every opportunity.”
Beginning her time at Lightning with her 100th national league game milestone, Shimmin found her place as part of the team’s circle defence, while also relishing stints at Wing Defence.
The defender has amassed an impressive 172 deflections, 166 gains and 59 intercepts in her five years of the Suncorp Super Netball competition, having previously also played for Adelaide Thunderbirds and Queensland Firebirds.
