The Adelaide Thunderbirds have confirmed their defensive end for the next two seasons with Jamaican superstar Shamera Sterling securing her place at the club until at least the end of 2023.
Sterling joins fellow Jamaican talent Latanya Wilson and Australian prospect Matilda Garrett in signing two-year deals with the club.
The international star has well and truly become a fan favourite in her first three seasons in pink and led the way in Adelaide’s defensive end.
She cemented her place amongst the best defenders in the league in 2021, finishing first in intercepts with 49, second in deflections with 86 and second in defensive rebounds with 25.
Sterling was named in the Nissan Net Points (NNP) Team of the Round on six occasions and was ultimately named in the Goal Keeper position for the 2021 NNP Team of the Year.
In Round 7, she celebrated her 50th national league game in Adelaide’s emphatic five-goal win over the NSW Swifts at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
Thunderbirds High Performance Manager Pitre Bourdon said Sterling represented a significant piece in the club’s list puzzle for 2022 and beyond.
“Shamera’s impact in our defensive end is undeniable and we’re thrilled to sign her for the next two seasons,” Bourdon said.
“Her talent and athleticism are incredible assets to our side, and we’ve been impressed with her growth and leadership over the past three seasons.
“She’s a fan favourite for a reason and we know she will be an important part of our club’s direction into the future.”
