She will continue in her role as Assistant Coach at GIANTS Netball through the remainder of the 2018 season, and will be taking on the position as Thunderbirds Head Coach for the 2019 Suncorp Super Netball season.
The Board of Netball SA confirmed last month that the contract of current Head Coach Dan Ryan, which expires at the end of the season, would not be extended.
A South Australian netball identity, Obst will be returning home to lead the evolution of the Adelaide Thunderbirds and to provide opportunities for South Australian athletes to play at the highest level.
Mr Scales said, “this is a very exciting time for our sport in South Australia, and we are thrilled with Tania’s appointment as Head Coach to drive our three-year plan to make the Adelaide Thunderbirds competitive, sustainable and successful.
“As we work towards our new strategic direction and the evolution of the Adelaide Thunderbirds, Tania will play a significant role in developing and supporting this change.”
Tania has demonstrated success in developing athletes and a winning culture, as well as extensive experience with high performance programs and coaches. Her appointment comes as part of the overall new strategic direction for Netball SA.
Tania said, “I am so excited about coming home to coach the Adelaide Thunderbirds. I am a proud South Australian, have strong roots in the netball community and I look forward to having a positive impact on the team and the sport more broadly in South Australia moving forward.”
Netball SA is in the process of considering governance changes for the Adelaide Thunderbirds and is committed to improving every facet of the program to provide Head Coach and the team a platform to operate in a high-performance environment, with a focus on developing local talent.
Tania continues, “I can’t wait to explore and support the outstanding local talent that exists in South Australia, to invest in the players, nurture and guide them. This will give our players and teams access to strong pathways”.
At its core the plan is for long-term sustainable success of the club, with a focus on local talent, complemented by international and/or interstate athletes.
General Manager – Adelaide Thunderbirds and Elite Pathways, Melody Cooper said, “Tania was a natural choice for our club to lead its new strategic direction. She is committed to working with Netball SA to make the Adelaide Thunderbirds a destination club.
“Together we are joining forces to re-establish our winning culture, which will breed future success. We both want to see SA talent in the [Samsung] Diamonds.”
Obst added, “I am well aware of the hard work we have ahead of ourselves, but my knowledge, commitment and energy will make sure we do what we need to do to make this club great again.”
