NSW Swifts’ electric defender Maddy Turner will celebrate her 100th national league game in the opening game of Round 12 when she takes on the Collingwood Magpies at John Cain Arena Saturday night.
The number 42 Swift joined the club in the final year of the trans-Tasman ANZ Championship in 2016 and debuted in Round 1 at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.
She went on to play in a thrilling Grand Final loss to the Queensland Firebirds in the same year, before taking home the club’s Most Valuable Player in 2017.
In 2019, Turner had her first taste of a premiership in the Suncorp Super Netball league when the Swifts defeated the Sunshine Coast Lightning. When the Swifts achieved premiership greatness again in 2021, Turner outdid herself being named the Grand Final MVP with a game high five gains.
A former South Australian development standout, Turner has developed into one of the leagues toughest and skillful defenders.
Turner’s 2021 season recorded 19 intercepts, 57 deflections, 18 rebounds and 496 Nissan Net Points. Oh, and let’s not forget her arguably most iconic moment of 2021... wearing the Goal Keeper bib in the centre third (can you say offside!)
Her mix of speed, athleticism, toughness and ability to work on the circle edge makes her just as suited to life in the midcourt as in defence, as we’ve witnessed on multiple occasions in 2022.
With 13 intercepts, 40 deflections and 449.5 Nissan Net Points so far this season, it’s safe to say Turner plays to consistency.
As a member of the NSW Swifts leadership team, Turner extended herself into the Origin Australian Diamonds in 2020.
After an injury-interrupted 2020 season however, she was renamed in the Diamonds Development Squad for 2021, and most recently the 2022-23 Diamonds Squad ahead of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Turner will play her 100th national league game against the Collingwood Magpies Saturday 28 May at 6.00pm AEST at John Cain Arena, Melbourne.
